1st week
Friday 28th - Sunday 30th September 2018

Openwork Oval Baskets with Mai Hvid Joergensen
Openwork willow baskets provide the perfect combination of strength and lightness ideal for shopping baskets and other utility baskets around the home. Combining a thick willow hoop at their base with scalloms and a fitched base and siding, your baskets may be finished off with a variety of traditional borders and handle styles. Mai will teach oval baskets with a handle with the additional option of round and oval trays with various borders as time allows.

Mediterranean Nansa Fish Trap Technique with Mònica Guilera
The Mediterranean is home to a beautiful and distinctive technique of weaving used by fishermen to make a variety of fishing baskets and traps. In Catalonia ‘Nansa’ fish traps were made in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the kind of fish they wanted to catch, the traps were usually made in the winter with a very tough kind of rush (Juncus acutus) as well as split cane (Arundo donax) and olive stems.
In this workshop you will learn to make a ‘cofe’ , a round basket that was used to place the fishing lines and hooks in preparation for line fishing. This basket will give you a good grounding in this very special technique based on triangles and you will have the opportunity to work with willow in combination with other Mediterranean materials and a variety of colourful threads and strings.

Twining in World traditions with Tim Johnson
Twining is one of the most useful and widely distributed basketmaking techniques that may be used to combine a wide variety of soft materials. This course taking inspiration from Tim's collection of baskets from around the world will give you the skills to make a variety of forms with several open and closed twining structures and several different beginnings.

Special Mediterranean materials like olive, cane, rush and palm may be combined with colourful willows to create texture and pattern.
