1st Week

Flexible
Basketry Structures - looping, netting and knotting
with Tim Johnson
Looping, netting
and knotting have been used for at least the past 20,000 years to make baskets,
traps and clothing, in this workshop you will explore these ancient
technologies and make contemporary bags, baskets and wall hangings with natural fibres
and recycled materials.
Contrasting a
variety of looping techniques with fixed knot structures this workshop gives an
excellent overview of the possibilities for both functional and contemporary
basketmaking and textile art projects. With reference to Tim's collection
of string bags and textiles from around the world you will learn to apply
appropriate techniques and combine materials to create individual functional and
experimental pieces.
with Mai Hvid
Joergensen
Working with a
variety of willows and Mediterranean materials such as olive and date palm, you
will explore the variety of textures and patterns created by different weaving
techniques and structures. Starting with round and oval bases, participants
will have the opportunity to learn a variety of weaves such as Herringbone and Zigzag
Weave, French Randing and the traditional Irish 'Donkey Windows'. These
techniques may be used to create a variety of beautiful baskets and bags for
functional and decorative use.
Catalan
basketmaking is a distinctive craft tradition that has fulfilled everyday needs
of the Catalan people for centuries. Rooted in this distinctive local tradition
this basket was used in Vilanova i La Geltru and along the Catalan coastline by
fisherman to land their catches. Combining an unusual willow base with either
willow or cane sidings, a three bundle rope border and two handles, this
attractive basket will introduce many of the locally specific techniques whilst
making a very useful household basket.
Alongside the Catalan Cove workshop participants may also opt for a variety of other traditional pieces with the classic combination of Catalan base, rope border and a variety of handles.

Fisherman's
Nansa Basket
with Monica Guilera
with Monica Guilera
This special Mediterranean technique combining rigid and flexible elements in an unusual
triangular structure was used by fishermen to create a variety of fish traps
and baskets according to the local catch and their specific needs. This course
will focus on the useful basket with a handle used by fishermen for their
lunch, tools and whatever else they needed for a successful day on the
water.
with Tim Johnson
Twining is one
of the most useful and widely distributed basketmaking techniques around the
world. This course, gathering inspiration from global traditions and Tim’s
recent researches in Australia and Morocco, will give you the skills to create
a variety of forms with a combination of both hard and soft materials.
with Mai Hvid
Joergensen
This technique –
unusual in willow – is native to basketmaking traditions amongst far-flung
peoples of Borneo, the Philippines, Zambia and California. While it’s full name
– ‘chased countered alternate pair twining’ doesn’t slip off the tongue – it
does give a beautiful and flowing texture to your baskets. One of Mai’s
favourite techniques, this basket has won her acclaim winning a prize at the
international basketmakers meeting in Novy Thomsyl in Poland.
