Fisherman's Basket in Nansa Fishtrap technique
with Mònica Guilera

Thursday 22nd - Saturday 24th September

This special Mediterranean technique combining rigid and flexible elements in an unusual triangular structure was used by fishermen to create a variety of fish traps and baskets according to the local catch and their specific needs. This course will focus on the attractive and useful fisherman's basket used for their lunch and tools ready for a successful day on the water.

Cafe Basket in rush with Tim Johnson

Tim designed this basket with coffee and cake in mind! Just the right size for a magazine, sketchpad and a mobile or tablet for a wander to your local cafe. This useful basket combines twining with a lattice stake structure resulting in both lightness and strength, a fold over border and rope handles completes the design. We will work with Reedmace (Typha latifolia) giving you the opportunity to become familiar with this commonly available material.

Frame Baskets
with Mai Hvid Joergensen

Monday 26th - Wednesday 28th September

Frame or rib baskets were traditionally made all over Europe with a variety of materials such as willow, hazel and spruce root and their shapes and proportions varied according to their size and function. Taking inspiration from these traditions you will learn how to control the shape and weaving to create beautiful shoulder bags and baskets that are both useful and stylish.
You will work with a variety of willows including some of Mai's own Danish home grown harvest, there will also be the option to work with willow bark in varied colours combining the traditional frame basket structure with a contemporary random weave.

Vilanova Fruit Basket in
Nansa Fishtrap Technique
with Mònica Guilera

Monday 26th - Wednesday 28th September

The Mediterranean is home to a beautiful and distinctive technique of weaving used by fishermen to make a variety of fishing baskets and traps. In Catalonia ‘Nansa’ fish traps were made in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the kind of fish they wanted to catch, the traps were usually made in the winter with a very tough kind of rush (Juncus acutus) as well as split cane (Arundo donax) and olive stems.
In this workshop you will learn to make a Vilanova Fruit Basket inspired by Monica's research into the diversity of the Vilanova tradition. Masters of their craft, fishermen created a wide variety of designs in the nansa technique for domestic as well as fishing usage. This basket combines a special star base with nansa technique sidings and a bundle border, you will gain a good grounding in this special technique based on triangles combining willow with a variety of colourful threads.

Rush pockets inspired by Zulu spoon baskets

with Tim Johnson
Monday 26th - Wednesday 28th September

Traditionally the Zulu peoples of South Africa made a wide variety of basketry objects for their domestic use alongside those used for gathering, trapping, costume and shelter. This workshop gathers inspiration from rush 'spoon baskets' collected by Antoinette Powell-Cotton (1915–1997) in the 1930's now kept in the collections of the Pitt Rivers and Powell-Cotton Museums in England.

These subtly beautiful baskets combine an unusual method of creating a spiralling plain weave structure with twined and knotted beginnings and endings and a variety of decorative embellishments.
In this workshop we will use a variety of soft plant materials with a variety of coloured cordage to create our own designs respectfully paying homage to tradition.
