Workshop Details - 2nd Week
Tuesday 1st - Thursday 3rd October 2019

'Keep' basket in Mediterranean 'Nansa' Fishtrap Technique
with Mònica Guilera
Tuesday 1st - Thursday 3rd October 2019

The Mediterranean is home to a beautiful and distinctive technique of weaving used by fishermen to make fishing baskets, traps and keeps. In Catalonia ‘Nansa’ fishtraps were made in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the kind of fish they wanted to catch, the traps were usually made in the winter with a very tough kind of rush (Juncus acutus) as well as split cane (Arundo donax) and olive stems.

In this workshop you will work with willow to make rounded baskets that elegantly contain space based on traditional 'keeps'. These were made in a variety of shapes and sizes with lids and were kept underwater to keep the catch alive until sufficient were caught to take them to market.

Contemporary Netting and Knotting with Tim Johnson
Tuesday 1st - Thursday 3rd October 2019

One of our most ancient technologies - knotted netting has been used for thousands of years to make a wide variety of traps, bags and clothing. This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to learn the basic netting techniques to make open flexible structures - and then explore their creative potential for a wide variety of contemporary baskets, body adornments, textiles and sculptural projects.

The emphasis of this course will be on experimentation and exploring the properties of combining knotting techniques with diverse materials to create your own innovative work.

Catalan with a Twist with Mai Hvid Joergensen
Tuesday 1st - Thursday 3rd October 2019
